Astrology may have its roots in astronomy but no two disciplines can be more different, while astronomy helps explain the position of the stars in the sky, astrology explains the movements of planets in the sky and how they affect us. In astrology, the sun and moon are counted as planets. The planets are rather significant in astrology: for instance while the sun is deemed to be the giver of life and refers to our conscious mind, the moon is said to represent the unconscious mind.

Hence, when people refer to their astrological sign, they are just indicating which sign of the zodiac the sun was in when they were born. The sun sign is the zodiac sign that the sun occupies at the time of your birth, whereas the moon sign is the zodiac sign in one’s horoscope where Moon was in transit during birth.

The zodiac sign at birth and its sign and position can give you great insights into yourself and the talents and special qualities that you possess. It’s easy to understand why birth charts want your time of birth and location of birth to calculate your star sign.

The study of astrology begins with the study of the zodiac signs (12 in number), which are divided into four basic elements: Fire – Aries, Leo and Sagittarius; Earth – Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn; Air – Gemini, Libra and Aquarius; Water – Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The word Zodiac actually means ‘animals’ as it refers to the different constellations that we see as stars at night. The 12 sun signs in the Zodiac correspond to twelve basic personality types that have been derived on the basis of the planetary positions at birth.

In astrology, celestial combinations work in weird ways and some star signs cannot work with others; each zodiac is unique in the sense that different signs are more compatible with each other while some combinations don’t work at all. Some star signs work better when they belong to the same element, but there are other combinations that are said to work equally well, as in Fire and air, or water and earth.

Synastry, which refers to the analysis of relationship in Astrology, is a rather interesting tool to show how individuals react with one other. Star sign compatibility thus determines to what extent your star sign matches with other signs when it comes to relationships, love and friendship. Star sign compatibility is what keeps astrologers on their toes for that’s one factor that has been sustaining the interest of millions of people around the world.

The fact that the horoscope columns in newspapers are read so avidly appear to indicate that the zodiac signs in which the sun appears is very important. However, modern astrology seems to sing a different tune. It believes that the star signs in which the sun appears is more significant.

Seeing that the ‘star signs’ were fixed some 2,000 years ago when the Zodiac came into being, they represented a particular constellation of stars behind the sun on the day and time you came into this world, but since then constellations have drifted—and that means stars have changed position. Does modern astrology take this into account while drawing up horoscopes?

Will our star signs remain the same if they are recalculated today in the face of this new knowledge? Well, ignorance may prove to be bliss in this case. Let our star signs remain the same, else it might turn the world of astrology Topsy-turvy.
